In the 1871 census George says he was born in Cuxwold.

George Carter    29    Cuxwold, Lincolnshire   (shepherd)
Fanny E Carter    28    Killingholme Brick Yarde
Fanny E Carter    2    Barton On Humber
Charles B Carter 0    Barton On Humber

GBC/1871/3437/0141

Will keep looking for Francis.  ;)

There is this Francis CARTER (blacksmith) in the 1871 at Ulceby with grandson John William CARTER, however he is not widowed?

Francis Carter    72              Hatcliffe, Lincolnshire
Ann Carter    Wife     65    Thoresway, Lincolnshire
John W Carter    Grandson    14    Ulceby, Lincolnshire

GBC/1871/3435/0081

Modified to add:
This is probably the grandson - birth reg Sept qtr 1856 Glanford Brigg (7a/576), no mother's maiden name recorded so possibly illegitimate.

Baptisms;
St Nicholas, Ulceby by Barton, Lincolnshire
EDWIN HENRY Carter 10 Jul 1846, Parents FRANCIS/ANN, Fathers occp Blacksmith, abode Ulceby.

Unfortunately he is not much help to find them on Census as the poor boy was buried 14 Jul 1846

FreeBMD has a Edwin Carter Birth Reg Sept 1845 Louth
GRO Index Birth Reg;

CARTER, EDWIN, Mothers mn CHEFFINS*****
GRO Reference: 1845  S Quarter in LOUTH UNION  Volume 14  Page 471

Remember this is a maiden name and if Frances married Ann later in lihe she may have been widowed.

Trish :)

William Carter 1824 Hatcliffe is easy to find on Census after 1861 (1861 under Cartes)
Marriage is on Familysearch.Org to Sarah Grant 1855, his Father Francis.

Sorry cant find any of them 1841/1851 Census.

Good find Trish, that looks very possible.  ;)

I can't see them on the 1841 or 1851 either.  :-\ Sometimes they like to hide.
