« on: Saturday 28 April 18 15:58 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Looking for service information about
Royal Navy Surgeon James Smith listed as on halfpay not practising in Montrose 1851 census aged 52.

Can anyone help me out with this?

Thanks
J

This might be his service record, downloadable for a modest fee, but it's a long shot ...

Found this list -
http://www.pbenyon.plus.com/Nbd/surgeons/Index.html

James Smith
Date promoted to Surgeon 09/11/1831
Date of Navy List - Appointment and date:
Dec 1843 - 19 Jul 43 , Inconstant
June 1844 - 19 Jul 43 , Inconstant

From Wikipedia there's HMS Inconstant launched in 1836.

Could that be your James ?

The record that Bookbox has found seems to include a reference to Inconstant 1843.

There were two surgeons named James Smith in the navy list, but given his age on the census I think the man with seniority dated 9 Nov 1831 is your man, in which case he also served on HMS Benbow in 1840 where he earned the Naval General Service Medal with the Syria 1840 clasp. This medal is currently not recorded as being extant.

Great information guys.
The service record seems to match up well, I've attached it below.
Lots of different ship postings.

Do enlistment records exist for that era?
