Unfortunately there appears to be some deterioration in the negative.

Thank you so much , he was a character and lived in San Francisco .I hope I put the negative in the scanner the right way up now . I now know who I am looking at though .

Five years ago, my brother unearthed some 35mm family slides taken in 1967. Gold dust!! They were in a bit of a state but he managed to pick up a dedicated scanner in a sale for £20 and with a bit of tweaking, although they are not great quality, the memories came flooding back.
The thing about this photo, taken in Whitby, is that my grandmother (on the right) would have been a year younger there as I am now. That is most worrying. ;D

Although I cannot make a good restore job I think you might get better results scanning each at a higher resolution one at a time, but of course I could be wrong:

They should be placed shiny side down and it helps to put white card on top them to stop them moving or curling.
I agree with Japeflakes...scanned individually at 800dpi is worth a try.
