1901 Census York - Annie Thackray
« on: Sunday 29 April 18 11:48 BST (UK) »
I would love to find Annie on 1901 census which was taken shortly before she married at St Lawrence Church on 6 April 1901.  Annie was born on 14 January 1872 at Harwood, Yorkshire but I am sure she would have been living in York at the time of her marriage.  She was not in her father's household in Bedford Street, York.

Unfortunately I have not been able to make out her address from the marriage entry.  It is 4 ?on Terrace , can anyone read it from the attached?  The Groom's address was 7 Willis Street to give you an idea of the style of the writing.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Bee,

Thank you for the suggestion - I know of a Carlton Avenue but not Terrace but there may have been one in 1901 of course.  I'll give it a try.

Regards

Found 4 Bishopthorpe Road, Carlton Terrace York in 1901. No Annie, but there is a Mary Merriweather (servant) who looks like she's George's sister.

Just noticed Mary Merriweather was witness to the marriage.
Do you think that 4 Carlton terrace was a false address so it appeared that Annie lived in the parish?

Hi Lizzie,

Thank you so much for finding 4 Carlton Terrace and particularly for spotting that connection, Mary was indeed George's sister.  In 1891 Annie was also working as a domestic servant in another part of York so that raises the possibility that Mary and Annie worked together and that is how George and Annie met.  Maybe Annie really did live and work at 4 Carlton Terrace in 1901 and was away the night of the census or as you suggest perhaps she just used Mary's address for the marriage. Very intriguing.

Thank you again for your help, I will go away and ponder now  :)
