What do the letters mean on the 1980 Australian Electoral Roll?

Could anyone tell me what the number in the left column is, and what the letter means next to it?

The four digits followed by a letter ... they are a check to make sure nothing duplicated or omitted in the EDP system.

Starts (for the people I'm looking in to):

1803 C Corten, Colin Edwyn...
1804 J Corten, Colin Vincent...
1805 B Corten, Imelda...
1806 H Corten, Kathleen Mary

So it's just a code as such, it doesn't really mean anything in terms of anything I would need to know for family tree purposes?
