Looking for a Edward Storrie. Born abt 1821 Kilconway Nth Ireland
Married 1845 New monkland, Jane Docherty - born Ireland abt 1831
Child Elizabeth born Scotland 1848.
He is not in the Irish 1851 Census - it states only three people there - his sister Charlott and parents
Edward in Scotland - but were.

I have found this entry on 1851 at Calder Bank, Old Monkland , Lanarkshire. Ages may be slightly out    - but I wonder if Edward has been mistranscribed  as Robert - the original census record would need to be checked on Scotlands People. Of course, the surname varies too. However the name of the brother-in-law clinches it for me as a strong contender for the family you are seeking.

Thank you. this matches up in more ways that one. Have checked that one on Scotland's people and the name is Robert. It is amazing what they have translated this surname to. And yes there is a daughter called Mary, but we thought she was born in 1852. The daughters have been mixed up in ages, and is Robert his real name. Would have understand if he had been called Ted.

Good. I'm pleased to have found them.
Spelling of names was so flexible back then. Many people couldn't read or write, so naturally couldn't spell their own names. It often depended on a registrar or a census enumerator to spell out the name they were told.
Re- daughter Mary. If you have evidence that Mary was born in 1852 that could mean the 4 year old Mary on the 1851 Census may have died. It was not unusual when a child died to reuse their name when another was born 
Have you found the family on the 1861 Census?  I have found what appears to be some of the children ( including a Mary who would have been born circa 1852) recorded as Stonis    I don't think they are with their parents.

Scotland's people is going to fix the spelling of the 1861 census.
You did well to find that one. they were on two pages.
It looks as though there was Two Mary's, going on the different census dates.
One a birth 1864, and then our one birth 1852. ( by Family)
I have not been able to find on Scotland's people either of them, nor the death of a Mary, nor the Elizabeth 1848
