Hi there,
I have ordered some marriage certificates and birth certificates which I will try and post the images of following this post but to summarise I have found the following and now things are even more confusing!!!
Catherine Myers - born in Holland abt 1804 (mother)
Her mother Sarah Myers - born in Holland 1768-1861 (grandmother)
Jacob Myers (1826–) Abt. 1826 • Middlesex, England
Father ??
Aaron Myers (1829–) Abt. 1829 • Middlesex, England
Father ??
Isaac Moyers (1829–1905) 1829 • Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England
Father ??. Marriage 1846 July 1846 • Birmingham, Warwickshire to Rebecca Coster, Fanny Davies, Sarah Levy or Emma Samuel (I don't have this certificate yet).
Father Benjamin Myers sealing wax maker. 16 Jul 1849 • West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England to Betsy Martin (evidence marriage cert). Isaac is a widow.
Father Isaac Myers sealing wax maker. 10 Mar 1872 • Walsall, Staffordshire, England to Sarah Theaker nee Ryley (evidence marriage cert) Isaac is a widow.
Henry Myers (1835–) Abt. 1835 • Middlesex, England
Father Henry Myers - evidence Poor Law removal and settlement 1862 Bethnal Green Reference Number London Metropolitan Archives BEBG/267/020 - Frying Pan Alley (the family home in census records) Catherine and son Henry. Widow of Henry Myers married 30 years ago in Amsterdam
Julia Myers (1838–1917) Abt. 1838 • Aldgate, London, England
Father - Jacob Myers on birth certificate and Benjamin Myers on Marriage certificate to Henry Barnett 18 August 1861. Great Synagogue, Duke St, London
Abraham Myers (1841–) 1841 • London, England
1841 Census • Christ Church Spitalfields, Middlesex, England
Father - Jacob Myers on birth certificate and Benjamin Myers on Freedom of the city documents
So for all of the children there is a father theme of Jacob, Benjamin and Henry. On all of Catherine's census returns there are no husbands.
As her surname is Myers and so is her mother's I wonder if she never married and her children are illegitimate but then I have been told this would have been uncommon in the Jewish community.
I am at a complete loss now!! If anyone has any suggestions about what might be going on (to give a bit of background Catherine was a fruit seller/dealer in Whitechapel/Bethnal Green and Spitalfields over time) I would be so grateful.
Best wishes,
Emma
