The name Rossi is on pages preceding those of the convent and he shows up living on St. Lawrence Street in the Montreal directory which was also part of this ward, as does Thomas Akers.

Thank you, eileen. I checked out the map (very interesting!). What I think is this: Soeur Cadotte (the first name on the page I posted) was the head of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, who ran several "good works" in Montreal. Roseanne undoubtedly resided in one of them, and now I need to find out which one. Thanks again.

I suspect it's the one that I identified based on other households enumerated before and after the convent and matching it up against the city directories.

She must have been one of the penitents, fallen women. She gave birth to a couple of illegitimate children before she died. Thanks for your help.

I've spent all day on this, as I often do.  ::)

I decided to got back 10 years in the St-Louis Ward. Many of the nuns are the same, but there are far fewer residents and they all have the first name of "Madeleine", which means they were sinners atoning for their sins, so I can assume my gggrandmother was as well. It makes me very sad.

There is an email addy in this link to Basilique Notre-Dame where the burial service for Roseanne was conducted, if I remember correctly. They should be able to hopefully tell you where someone would have been buried in 1896.

Thank you, polarbear, I will gave that a try. I already have a message out to Notre Dame Des Neiges cemetery, as I believe that is where she will have been buried.
