It is in the military records on FindMyPast. I simply searched for John Walker born 1832(plus or minus 2) - it is the 5th record down.

Thanks William - found it now. I trawled through the army records for hours yesterday and I think I looked at this one but I obviously didn’t read the details carefully enough. At the point I looked at it I don’t think I had identified the possible Burton on Trent link.
Annie  - I will pass National Archive details on to the friend I am helping with this as I’m sure he will want a copy of his service records.
Rootschat comes up trumps yet again!!

Just wanted to let you know that I have found John in 1841. He is with parents John and Sarah in Longton, Stoke on Trent with other siblings. The youngest of these is Jane age 4 months. Gro have a birth Dec qutr 1840 of Jane Walker mmn Hassall in Burton upon Trent.

It's a great feeling Isobel to know we can be of at least some assistance to each other on different threads but the good thing is when all hands are on deck with different ideas/knowledge etc. just glad you've found your missing info. & hope your friend is happy!
