Location of regiments/units in UK
« on: Tuesday 01 May 18 15:06 BST (UK) »
Is there a resource which identifies which regiments/units were located in a specific place in the UK during the war? I'm trying to find out which ones might have been in the Bristol area in September 1917,

No easy answer I'm afraid.
It depends on what type of soldier you're referring to.
Based in the UK were the Garrison Battalions that became the Royal Defence Corps. They were concerned with home protection & were usually made up of men too old/infirm to serve overseas.
There were also similar units of the Royal Artillery.
In addition there were hospitals & rehabilitation centres all over the UK. Men could be here for several months.
Also there were Battalions held in reserve for postings in Ireland or overseas as the need arose.
You see the problem.
To add to the confusion there were also men on Special Reserve or in the ASC who could be working in the Bristol area at factories or on the docks.

Thanks Jim, I thought it might be a hopeless task. I'm relying on hearsay anyway, and looking for an individual I have been told was in Bristol September/October 1917 but was killed in action in April 1918,

No, that's what I'm attempting to discover. He was the supposed father of an illegitimate child born in July 1918 and the story of his being a serviceman and dying in April of that year is all I've got to go on. I'm hoping that via DNA matches I might tie down suitable candidates and try to place him in Bristol at the correct time.

rather a long shot I feel - there were a rather large number of men in the army at that time!
