Could be as there is a Townend Road in Dumbarton ..Chiad Fhear have you checked for your relation or  family on census records 1881/1891 to see where   they were living ?

Hi all

Thanks for the input.  Townend seems most likely now that I've had another look at it and, as you say, there is a "Townend" in Dumbarton.

I can't find the family on the 1881 Census  ???  Alexander McLaren was born 1831, Dunblane, Perthshire and Mary (Heslet or Hyslop) was born 1849 in Paisley, Renfrewshire.  Alexander - the mystery address - died in 1887 in Dumbarton.

Cheers

If my memory serves me right there was Poor House and also a Cottage Hospital in Townend Road - not sure about the 1887 timescale though, as I wasn't about !!

Sorry folks ... a busy afternoon then the evening meal got in the way!

No mention of Alexander being a Ship Steward; he is recorded as a Gardener/Market Gardener in the Register of Marriage (1869) and the 1871 Census respectively.  He died of a disease of the liver in 1887.
