Frances Eleanor Barrett
« on: Friday 04 May 18 10:43 BST (UK) »
I have been trying to find further information about Frances Eleanor
Born in Wytham Berkshire 12 June 1852 bapt 4 July 1842 Father William[b 6 1 1811 Cumnor; mother Ann b 1815 Tetworth Oxfsh]
She is on the 1861 census with the family as a scholar
In 1871 she is with her brother Joseph, wife Julia, an infant, + nurse, lodger and visitor in Oxford
1881 census not found
1891 She may be the Frances E Lodging House Keeper and head in Cheltenham with 6 yr old nephew Lionel Clarke but her age given is 35... Unfortunately there is a Frances Ellen b Abingdon 1856 and I wonder if this is her not my Frances Eleanor?
The other query is Lionel - there is a Lionel Barrett Clarke so this suggests a link but I cannot confirm mother. Would be grateful for help to sort this conundrum. I can't find a death for my Frances either

Birth registration gives mothers maiden name Barrett

Jun 1884 Bath
5c 630

the certificate would give the name of his mother, maybe a sister of Frances Eleanor?

Joseph in Northampton with the same mother's surname:

BARRETT, JOSEPH
Mother's maiden surname: BOWELL
GRO Reference: 1846  June Quarter in TOWCESTER  Volume 15  Page 414

You can see mother's maiden name on the GRO indexes.  You have to register but it is free to use:

Long shot but Frances does have a sister Emily S and there is a marriage in Dec 1883 Oxford

Emily Sophia Barrett
Harry Clarke

who may have produced Lionel, not sure why Bath though  :-\

Hello
I'm not sure how to say this and I've spent a good part of the Morning trying to check it out.

But there is a Lionel Conrad Clarke born 18 May 1884 in Bath
He says he emigrated to the USA in 1892 but the first passenger record I can see is in 1900.His Aunt has paid for the trip and there is a mention of Elias Till.
He died in California 2 Dec 1965 Panoroma City L.A
The family tree on Ancestry has Frances Ellen Barrett 12.6.1852 Wytham - 1.3.1931 L.A California as his mother.
There is only 1 Lionel Clarke  born in Bath anytime near 1884 at that is the 'nephew' Lionel Barrett Clarke.

Frances E Till died 1.3.1931 in L.A California age 70.
There is a marriage  at Marylebone 11.8.1903
John Stanley Till 52 bach clerk in Holy Orders Ticehurst Sussex John Till dec clerk HO.
Frances Ella Barrett 45 spinster 56 Devonshire St Frederick William Barrett dec gentleman.
wit Emily Sarah Till ,Mary Sandys and Edward William Andrews

John Stanley Till is buried 25.10.1905 in Wiltshire at Ramsbury

There is an implication of a previous relationship with a John Walker Wall.1838-1895

What do you think?

Birth registrations are correct - well that's what I found.
Need to check the sisters but at this stage none of the sisters married a Clarke so that makes me think that Lionel is Frances' child not nephew. There is Georgina Barrett born 1856 in Wytham but it is thought she died aged 12.
I have most of the info for Frances' siblings; the girls -Ann E b 1840; Susannah '42 married and came to NZ; Emily Sarah b 1844 marr George Rowell/Bowell?; Louisa M 1848 married '81. No Sophia appears anywhere...

Hi ciderdrinker - it's a long time since I had communication from you some years ago!!
That family tree has caused me much angst and I have checked some of it and found incorrect info Frances Ema married Till so not my Frances. Lionel Conrad is not Lionel Barrett but the info is muddled. While the aunt you mentioned seems to be Frances , is it the Edith Arrow on the census?

I think that tree is a classic case of taking info and not checking properly to see if it really belongs so that is partly why I am trying to disprove all/much of it.
What I want to know - Is the Frances lodging house keeper my Frances or the one reg in Abingdon?
Where is she in 1881? 1891?
I agree it is possible she migrated but the family are not at all sure that she married???
Help!!!
