I spent ages on Ancestry at the library and have a complete blank on Frances Ellen. Same with Family Search... She must have been somewhere in 1881 because Lionel Barrett Clarke was born in 1884
Family history is challenging to say the least

Going back to that 1881 census record I found at reply #11, I checked the births for a Frances E BARRATT between 1851 and 1853 and came up with nothing.

I would be inclined to think this is a definite possibility for your Frances Carol.

Moving on to the 1891 census

Registration district   Cheltenham
Piece number   2047
Folio   83
Page   1

Did anyone look at the original image?  I notice that Frances birth place is given as Oxford Wytham.

Now isn't this where you said that Frances was born?  I would be very much so of the opinion that this is the correct Frances despite the birth year being wrong.  Perhaps Frances wanted to appear younger than she was or maybe she forgot in what year she was born?

Thank you very much I agree with all that. But where did she go after that??? And I'm not convinced she went to USA> But I am pretty sure that Lionel Barrett Clarke born in Bath in 1884 is hers - he doesn't fit with any other girls in the family...

The only way you will sort out Lionel is to get his birth cert.  £6 for a pdf which should be quicker and cheaper than a certificate.

Depends on whether you wish to clarify who he belongs to.

Yes I know Girl Guide. Thanks for your help. It's not my family that's the problem - friend's.
Need to look at immigration from 1893-4 and see if anything comes up for her or Lionel.

I can find no marriage or link to John Wall with Frances Ellen and so far no immigration record... Like Henry George/George Henry Clark, they have both vanished into thin air!
Sigh!

Hi,

I might have found Frances's emigration record,

Ship:   S.S. Celtic
Sailing from:   Liverpool
December 19th 1921
Date of Arrival:   January 1st 1920

TILL  Francis Eleanor
Age:   59
Female
Widow
Book-keeper
Can read and write English
Nationality:   English
Last Place of Residence:   Quainton, England
Name of and complete address of nearest relative or friend in Country whence alien came:  Friend, Mrs ROWELL, Budehurst Rectory, Essex, England
Final Destination:  Cal. Citrisin? *

Looking at the last place she lived I think she could have been travelling with  friend on the line above,

DAVIS Lydia Brocklesby
Age:   47
Female
Single
Domestic
Can read and write English
Nationality:   English
Last Place of Residence:   Quainton, England
Name of and complete address of nearest relative or friend in Country whence alien came:  Sister, Mrs Whitley, Bourton, Salop, England
Final Destination:  Cal. Citrisin? *

* The final destination has a line through and Engaldn written over it in another pen, also both have been stamped NON? IMMIG

I don't know if that means they intended to return to England?

Didn't Frances's sister Emily Sarah marry a James ROWELL?

Regards,
Daisy

Oh my goodness Daisy, you are amazing. I'll have to go back and do a check because there is some confusion/disagreement over the Rowell/Bowell connection. There are records for both. Now why would she be going to the US if her husband died? Thank you very much for your efforts.
Carol

And later: I think this is a possibility but the age isn't correct: Frances Ellen/Eleanor was born in 1852 not that that is so important. I checked Family Search but couldn't find a marriage for a Till and Frances. I will have a look at Ancestry tomorrow and also check deaths for a Frances Till. Mmm where's Quainton - I need the atlas again. Lydia may well have been a companion rather than a friend...

Now why would she be going to the US if her husband died?

Maybe to visit her son Lionel???

Final Destination records Cal Citrisin so probably California

Lionel Clarke was living in California

Death: Frances Eleanor Till aged 70, 1st March 1931, Los Angeles California

Just a thought but could this have been Emily Sarah Rowell

This could be the death reg for Emily Sarah Rowell:

Epping is in Essex

Quainton is in Buckinghamshire approximately 24 miles NN East of Wytham
