Added...I’ve jsut been onto YouTube and they pronounce it HUMSHAW. So.... maybe not a goer after all.  I was thinking it was HUMSHUFF

I live a couple of miles away and it is most definitely pronounced Humshaff.

Would Hexham archives have a copy of the Parish Registers or Bishops transcripts

Humshaugh was a Chapelry of Simonburn.
The baptisms are available via the BT's.

This one is interesting:

30th January 1831. Matthew son of John and Mary Snapdew. Abode: formerly of [somewhere] in Yorkshire but now travelling about the country. Father's occupation hatter

I can't work out the place in Yorkshire.

It could be Dennyston, but that is in Scotland, not Yorkshire.

Is the occupation hatter? iI think I might have misread it. Could it be halter, i.e someone who made halters for horses - more likely if travelling around  :-\

I would agree with Halter.  Like you said, makes sense if the family were travelling around.
