Looking at the census's from 1851 to 1911, it looks like his birth was in Cumberland, around the area of Caldbeck and Castle Sowerby.

If I’m looking at the right man we have birth places of

Unknown
Parish of Hexham - and someone has written North in the last column
Scotland
Castle Sowerby Cumberland
Northumberland Holmshalf(t)

I can see why you want to know the one you have posted!!  BTW. In that one note they have spelled Castle Castel so perhaps we need to be a bit more imaginative

Humshaugh is a parish near Hexham in Northumberland, England. This small village is just north of Chollerford, which is located near Chesters Fort on Hadrian's Wall and is about 21 miles west of Newcastle upon Tyne.

This could account for Parish Of Hexham AND Holmshalf
And if you look at the one you posted, the first letter does look a bit like the H in House in the last entry
Parish registers for Humshaugh are on Familysearch, but viewable at an FHS centre

Thanks for your thoughts everyone
But still unsure
I thought Holmshalf was a possibility as I know his associates travelled between Cumberland and Northumberland, but I've never found a baptism there
I cant see the 1851 census reading Holmshalf although I do agree it look like it starts with an H
Ah well, a cuppa is needed

Baptisms for Humshaugh are on Family Search but locked, so at the LDS centres
I’m thinking he had a Very strong regional accent and the enumerator has written it phonetically Huhold?

Added...I’ve jsut been onto YouTube and they pronounce it HUMSHAW. So.... maybe not a goer after all.  I was thinking it was HUMSHUFF

Sorry I used the wrong spelling before
Your idea about dialect is a good one
I live in Cumbria, do you know the nearest LDA centre
