Bridget Foley - date/year of birth
« on: Friday 04 May 18 13:49 BST (UK) »
Have been trying to find the date of birth of one of my wife's ancestors called BRIDGET FOLEY
She got married on 28 March 1859 to a James Bell ( soldier ) at St. Anne, Shandon, Cork.
Been looking through various census for England / Wales as when he had left Regular Army he was posted to West Suffoulk Militia in Bury St. Edmunds.
So later they again moved together to Merthyr Tydfil in Wales where they ended there days.
Trouble is persons ages in the Census are sometimes way out either through the enumerator estimating things or the actual person giving erroneous birth dates.
For instance - Bury St. Edmunds 1861 - her age is 24 ( yob - 1837 )
                           Merthyr Tydfil 1881 - her age 50 ( yob - 1831 )
                              "    "      "    1891 - her age 60 ( yob 1831 )
                              "    "      "    1901 - she still 60  ( yob 1841 )
Can someone please, please, please put me out of my misery and find her real age when she got married ( which was a Civil Registration )
Oddly James Bell her husband is listed as a Protestant on birth details of their children but they are baptised Roman Catholic.
Does that mean the mother Bridget was Roman Catholic ?
In case anyone actually finds real birth details - Census info. states she was born in Cork.
And Bridget Foley's father was called William Foley.
Thanks again for any help with this one

I can see only one baptism that could match but many records are not online and many are not available from that period

Bap Feb 16 1833 Bridget FOLEY - d/o William FOLEY & Mary HENIGAN or KERRIGAN [urk=https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634264#page/31/mode/1up]LINK[/url]
Kerrigan is the transcription given on one site but it looks more like Henigan to me

This couple had at least one more child baptised in Killeagh
Bap Jan 17 1836 Edmond FOLEY (Mother's surname shown as HANNIGAN)

Killeagh is about 32 km (20miles) west of Cork city

There is no proof that this is correct but I would keep in mind

Do the witnesses at the marriage given any hints?

Thank you myluck
Oddly enough I am just wading through the parishes reference that hallmark sent to me.
Found the baptism of Bridget Foley's ( married name BELL ) two kids who were born in Cork 1859 and 1860.
Their parish was St Patricks.
If I am looking for birth / baptism of Bridget Foley, is it likely that she would have married in the same parish as her birth ?
She was married to James Bell in 1859 in St. Anne, Shandon, Cork.
So could maybe she be found in that parish ?

Most women married in their own parish if they still lived there, or near there.

St. Anne's in Cork is Church of Ireland/Anglican Protestant where they married and located in the centre of the city

As the children were baptised in St Patrick's which is Catholic I would consider that Bridget was a Catholic and married in a church close to where she lived rather than where she was originally from.

Do the names of the children include a William or Mary? which would link to baptism
or are the sponsors' surnames Foley to follow another member of the family for clues?

Thanks for the info. myluck!
Children of Bridget Foley and James Bell -

James Bell - bapt. 24 April 1859...........Sponsers - William Barry and Mary Barry
Mary Bell - bapt. 15 Dec 1860..............Sponsers - Margaret ? Barry

Doubtful this will make much difference in the search unless they are relatives ( maybe Bridget's mother was a Barry ? )

There is a naming pattern that holds true for many families
It doesn't always work and sometimes is distorted by deaths or duplicated names

The pattern was loosely
The eldest son was named after the child’s paternal grandfather
The second son was named after that child’s maternal grandfather
             (unless previously used)
The third son was named after the father
             (unless previously used)
The fourth son was named after the child’s eldest paternal uncle
             (unless previously used)
Subsequent sons were named after other paternal uncles, in order of the age of the uncles

The eldest daughter was named after the child’s maternal grandmother
The second daughter was named after the child’s paternal grandmother
             (unless previously used)
The third daughter was named after the mother
             (unless previously used)
The fourth daughter was named after the child’s eldest maternal aunt
             (unless previously used)
Subsequent daughters were named after other maternal aunts, in order of the age of the aunts

On this basis I would ask was James' Bell's father's name James?
If so I would consider that Bridget's mother's name was Mary

This is supposition but always worthwhile holding onto theories until disproven! or proven correct!!
