Forts Square Head, Padiham
« on: Friday 04 May 18 15:11 BST (UK) »
According to a document found, in January 1888, a young child died at Forts Square Head in the SD of Padiham.

Can't find this on any maps, so hoping that someone with very local knowedge can help.  I don't like not knowing!  ;)

Just to add a little infomation.  The family lived in Sabden area, and she's buried at St Nicholas, Heyhouses.

There was a Fort Square in Sabden, which is 2.6 miles from Padiham.

Thanks Stan, but do you have any idea where?   I'v'e tried many a map.

I suppose Forts Square Head could mean the top end of the square.

There are a number of newspaper reports, from 1896 to 1926, that mention Fort Square Sabden, but I can't see it on a map, and it is not mentioned in the 1911 census.
This is in the Burnley News - Saturday 25 December 1926, in 1911 William Battersby, and Mabel are living at 24 Pendle Street East, which you can see on the map at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html#/Map/377692/437213/12/100674

Thanks Stan, co-incidentally, the family in question also lived in Pendle St East, no 12 in 1901, and 32 in 1911.   1901 says it is 'part of' Read, but 1911 definitely Sabden, Northtown.

It has been pointed out to me elsewhere that Fort Square was probably in Read, where the present Fort Street is.

It appears that my curiousity has been satisfied to a fair degree, so thank you again.   :)

Looking at the 1891 census, Fort Square must be in Sabden, south of Sabden Brook. The order of enumeration is:

Black Bull
Nutter Barn
Pendle View
Fort Square
Catholic Houses
Cobden Row
Watt Street
Pendle Street

You can see the Black Bull, Nutter Barn, Watt Street and Pendle Street on this map: https://maps.nls.uk/view/126516950#zoom=4&lat=2722&lon=2985&layers=BT

I think Fort Square is probably the little square off Watt Street, next to Cobden Mill. The Fort brothers were co-owners of Cobden Mill.

Thank you Radcliffe, I hadn't looked at OPC as I have seen the burial register for her and 2 sisters.  The 4th sister is possibly in the register which is blanked so will try it for her.

Shaun, thank you for your suggestion as to where Fort Square may be, probably too small to be marked, at least on any of the ones I have seen.

Perhaps the deaths register may offer a little more, so I suppose that is my next step.

Thank you everyone for your interest.

it is not mentioned in the 1911 census.

Actually that census is quite revealing. The occupier of 11 Pendle Street East (the address on the census return and on the enumerator's list) has written her address as 11 Fort Square. They must be one and the same.
