Baptism of Mary BROMBY possibly Rempstone about 1690 - 1710
« on: Saturday 05 May 18 00:41 BST (UK) »
Mary BROMBY & William PHIPPS [son of William PHIPPS & Elizabeth UNKNOWN] married 17 Dec 1718 at Rempstone.  The transcript of the Parish Registers does not indicate if the marriage was by Banns or Licence nor the status of the couple.

William was baptised at Barrow Upon Soar, Leicestershire 15 Apr 1696 and the newly wed couple's first child William was baptised at Barrow Upon Soar, Leicestershire on 23 Nov 1719.

The couples following children baptised in an approx 2 yearly sequence were:
Thomas - 1722
George - 1725
Mary - 1727
Ruth - 1733.

Hoping for some assistance to locate Mary BROMBY's baptism.

Westy

Hi

There is a transcript of the marriage on FindMyPast which does state the marriage was by Licence, and that she was resident in Rempston, he from Barrow.

Possibly finding a copy of the Licence may include more information.

Hello Claire,

Thanks so much for that and located a transcript of the licence that notes "WILLIAM PHIPPS, of Barrow, co. Leic, labourer, bac , 22, & Mary Broomby, of Rempstone, spr, 2 5 ; at same"

Not sure what the 'at same' means when applied to Mary.

We now know [thanks to you Claire] that Mary was born about 1693.

Progress.  WOO HOO.  ;D

Hi Westy

I can't see anything for Bromby/Broomby but this one may be worth looking into in Cotgrave (about 8 miles from Rempstone)

Mary BRUMBY baptised 22 Nov 1691 Cotgrave, daughter of William Brumby

Hello again Claire,

I had wondered about that one and now that we know Mary was born about 1693 I wondered about a baptism in 1691.

What do you think???

Hi Westy

It would be quite easy to say yes but I'm still not sure given there are numerous Broomby, Bromby families about.

Transcriptions for Rempstone are online and doing a search 1691+/- 5 years for just a Mary shows no Brumby or variant.

Just searching for Brumby with no forename 1691 +/- 10 years show no Brumby etc. family at all.

It is the closest baptism in Cotgrave I can see though.

Maybe searching some Wills might be an idea ?

Hello Claire,

Thats a good idea and many thanks.

I wonder if there are any gaps in the Rempstone records?
