Convict to Western Autralia from Warwickshire
« on: Saturday 05 May 18 08:10 BST (UK) »
Where else can I look..I'm researching a convict who is not related to me and I do not know any thing of his family other than he had a brother John.
I have all of him here in Australia its finding more of him and his family in England that I'm after.
Thomas EVANS [ cotton spinner ]..born abt 1837..ship Balgravia arrived 4th July 1866..unmarried [ never married ] Sentence Province Warwickshire. Tried for setting fire to a hay stack... next of kin was his brother John [ cotton spinner ]who in 1866 lived in Elizabeth Street Manchester.
I have looked on many census but any of them could be him or his brother and not knowing his parents names makes it hard.
As I said above I have all of him in Australia it is ENGLAND...that I'm seeking help on
Hope someone can come up with a idea where to look next

FindMypast has several prison records entries for Thomas Evans, age 27, convicted of arson 5 Dec 1864 and sentenced to 8 years penal servitude. One of those records is endorsed "To W Australia, Mar 1866".

Aris' Birmingham Gazette, Sat 10 Dec 1864
ARSON AT BIRMINGHAM - John Tomlinson, 23, cotton bleacher, and Thomas Evans, 27, collier, pleaded guilty to having set fire to a stack of hay, the property of Ann Edkins of Birmingham on Dec 4th last - Eight years penal servitude.

A separate newspaper report records "... Thomas Evans, (27), labourer, Liverpool and John Tomlinson, (23), doubler, Manchester ..."

The prison records give his occupation as "labourer".

Thanks to all.
Yes..re the tip off!! I have posted before on this and its been helpful thank you, and that Loom St is not far from Elizabeth Street..but still not confirming for me...as I said I have looked at and have copies of all Thomas's and John's Evan's in the 1861 census..plus looked at census after Thomas came to Australia but none are linking John to Thomas. As you can guess..Evans is a common surname. I'm thinking poor Old Tom's research is at a stop, I was hoping that someone had an idea.. other than census
