Illegitimate Henry Ellis?
« on: Saturday 05 May 18 16:33 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to piece together but not sure if my 5th grt grandfather was illegitimate or not?
Henry Ellis
Born abt 1815.
On a census records from 1841 to 1901 he lists birthdate as around 1815 and birthplace as Ratby/Groby.
Occupations: Ag Lab, Game Keeper, Stone Quarrier
Henry Marries Sarah Sutton Oct 1837 Ratby, Leic. Henry is listed as minor.
Henry leaves his fathers name blank and I can see no baptism for Henry at all.
A William and Thomas Ellis is baptising in Ratby around the same time but I cant see a Henry being baptised.

Hi
I see Henry & Sarah's children are baptized at a Wesleyan Chapel the registers of which are held at Bishop Street Leicester, so probably Henry had  a non conformist baptism?
Ellis Ann, Henry & Sarah Groby 12yeras old 27/3/1849
Ellis Edwin Henry & Sarah Groby 5 and a half 27/3/1849
Ellis Harriet Henry & Sarah Groby 4years old 27/3/1849
All baptized on the same day.

Thank you for that.
I did notice a William Ellis baptising around the same time as Wesleyan. I’ll have to take a look.
I wonder what the reason was for not listing who his father was.

I' ve  looked on the FHS nonconformist CD but there are no Ellis baptisms in either Groby or Ratby around then, and no Henry Ellis anywhere else.

If he was a minor in Oct 1837, he must have been born slightly later than the estimates as a minor signifies under 21 at age of marriage.
