This is probably not him. The family seemed to follow the Scottish naming convention rigorously, which means I would have expected an Archibald amongst the children.

Okay fair enough.  I wasn't really sure as the birth year was two years later.  Is it likely that William followed his sister to America?

There is a distinct possibility. So far I have not been able to identify anybody that might be him but then again I haven't been spending much time trying to find him in America. I think I will have to put more effort into that avenue.
