Caroline Winch, born 1829, Camberwell

Hello,

Can anyone view check what the original record says? Obviously Caroline didn't have two mothers. I had a similar record in Essex which had been amended that showed two female names.

Thank you. That is bizarre. I'll look for a marriage of someone to an Ann Winch, as that's definitely the mother. The father must've been written down wrong presumably.

Possibly illegitimate? There is a Mary Ann Winch born 1811 in Camberwell.

Yes but considering there is no record for a James Winch and knowing that many illegitimate children would simply make up a father's name on a marriage certificate it's not totally implausible.

I'm going to make a note of it but it's far from certain. I have a few ancestors who assign their fathers jobs they never had e.g. my great-great-grandfather Verdant Goddard gave his father's occupation as 'bailiff' when he had only ever been an agricultural labourer.
