Thanks!

My search for the mysterious Caroline Winch goes on. And William Cartwright and all the rest unaccounted for...
Lipman family of Aldgate - ends with Lewis Lipman (d. 1871, Bethnal Green), son of John Lipman 'late of Glasgow' (1856)
McGregor family of Fodderty - ends with Alexander McGregor (b. 1765, Fodderty), son of Murdoch McGregor and Kate Stewart

Your Caroline marries in 1855 Hillingdon -her father James Winch occ Clerk.

Census after marriage gives her place of birth as (her age also varies_
Paddington, Middlesex (1861) bn c1833
Bow, Middlesex (1881)  bn c1831
London, Middlesex (1871 & 1891)
Possible for her in 1851 a servant - Caroline Winch age 20 living in Uxbridge Born Essex ........

Also in 1851 Hillingdon there is an Elizabeth Winch age 17 born Essex - a servant

Have you investigated this death for a James Winch in Uxbridge reg district
WINCH, JAMES       age 40
1840  Sept Quarter
UXBRIDGE reg dist
Volume 03  Page 257

There are Winch families in the Uxbridge /Hillingdon area on the early census.  Maybe these families will give you a lead to finding your Caroline.

I would also not disregard a father James with an occupation other than 'Clerk'.  She may have been trying to impress  ::)

Thanks for all that! I'll look into the 1840 death. I'm sure I can locate a burial somewhere. That would explain why there's no 1841 Census record for the family. However the lack of a baptism is the missing piece of the puzzle unfortunately.

She died in 1904 in the Chelmsford District (probably Writtle), where her daughter and son-in-law were living at the time. My great-grandad was born there in 1902 and seeing as Caroline was living in Uxbridge with his parents in 1901 it's probable she moved with them.

I've searched the 1841 Census for a Caroline Winch but other than the already discounted one (written as Wench), there's no sign of her. Presumably if the 1840 death was her father, she'd be living with her widowed mother.

Some parts of Middlesex are missing in 1841.

The witnesses at Caroline’s wedding are James and Jane Mead.   These same two also witnessed the 1857 wedding of Eliza Winch to George Bricknell.

When a Susannah Mead married in 1861, her witnesses were George and Eliza Bricknell.

1841 census Willesden

James Mead   45  wheelwright   No
Hannah     30     Yes
George     15     Yes
John     14     Yes
Elizabeth     12     Yes
Julia     4     Yes
Jane     8     Yes
Susannah     6     Yes
Caroline     10     No

James Mead married Hannah 1834

James Mead married Jane Winch in 1821

My guess at this point would be that James Mead’s first wife was the sister to Caroline’s father James Winch.  When James Winch died, Caroline was taken in by the Mead family.

That would make sense. In theory then if we can find two baptisms for a James Winch and a Jane Winch with the same parents then that should be Caroline's father and aunt.
