merchant ship Convoy ONS 5 1943
« on: Monday 07 May 18 18:09 BST (UK) »
Hi folks, my late father Bob Casey sailed on merchant ship Wentworth, this ship sailed from Middlesbrough up to Scotland with other vessels, all became convoy ONS 5, sailed April 1943. I always wondered if all crew members of this ship were local lads, I learned after my dad passed away that another chap who lived in Middlesbrough was on Wentworth, wonder how many other locals were on this ship, Wentworth was torpedoed between 5-6 May, suvivors with at least two other crews from sunken merchants were picked up by flower class corvette Loosestrife, dad always thought Loosestrife rammed and sunk a U-boat but now know it depth charged the U-boat, all taken onto
St Johns Nova Scotia.
Is there any one out there who had relative who sailed on Wentworth, and also would a crew list survive of who sailed on the last voyage of Wentworth.
Any help greatly appreciated.
All the best.

Derek,
The last crew agreement for WENTWORTH official number 142836 should be held at the National Archives, Kew in piece BT 381/2328 - http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C11053741

Not all were local - the master was from Suffolk and, of those who were lost, 3 were from Cumbria, 1 from South Sheilds and 1 from Middlesborough.
