Robert Hunter c1850's , Service records, East Indies?
« on: Tuesday 08 May 18 02:04 BST (UK) »
The Glasgow 1855 valuation roll lists a "Robert Hunter, soldier, East Indies" as the proprietor of 63 Mill St Rutherglen where my 3g grandfather, John Bennie, was living. I suspect he was somehow related to John's first wife, Jane/Janet Hunter.

Is is possible to access these records?

Oh dear, big haystack!

East Indies at that time essentially meant India and soldiers there were either in the East India Company's army (until 1857) or the British army both before and after that date.

His name produces some hits on the FIBIS site but without a bit more information I'm not sure we can get much further there.  Military records also have some/a lot of Robert Hunters in India at the time but without any personal information to identify them.

Not much help I'm afraid.

Thank you both for your feedback.

MaxD, I was hoping that the records would have a date or place of birth :-( I think I'll have to work back from my Hunter ancestors instead - hopefully a marriage or death cert will mention the right occupation.

ShaunJ, Thanks for the Robert Hunters you found. I'll see if any of them are mentioned in contemporary newspaper accounts.

I did check the 1861 census for Glasgow but of course, I realised that Robert Hunter would not be listed.

Trevor, A very belated thank you for the other Robert Hunters. For some reason replies to my posts aren't being notified and I only just stumbled on this one. You're right about a date of birth - it's proving very elusive at present.
