Peter Catterall, attorney & registrar
« on: Wednesday 09 May 18 15:24 BST (UK) »
Peter Catterall of 15 Winckley Square, Preston, must have been born about 1796.
Can anyone tell me the maiden surname of his wife Jane?
And was he a brother of Paul who lived next door?

I think it was Jane Rishton. Marriage witnesses ( Witton-Cum-Twambrooks, Cheshire, 20 Sep 1822) were Mary Catterall and Edw Rishton.

Many thanks to you all for your swift help.

I'd already found Paul's marriage, but Peter evidently married elsewhere.
Oh, and no. 13 where he lived was presumably next-door-but-one: I was forgetting for a moment that houses are numbered consecutively round a square with a garden in the middle.

There is an actual marriage licence for the wedding of Peter Catterall to Jane Rishton - he is described as a 'gentleman' of Preston and Jane was a spinster of Witton. Both are 'twenty one years and over'
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

More thanks to you kind Rootschatters.
Mary Ann must have been his second wife: he was a widower in the 1861 census.

I'll confess my interest: the son John (b. 1833) married in 1856 Amelia Threlfall (b. 1831) whose father also appears to have lived in Winckley Square.  The clergyman who married them was the Rev. Richard Holgate Brown, who I think was Amelia's 2nd cousin and who a few years later married Harriet, daughter of Paul Catterall.

It's the sort of thing that happens in family trees.
