If you have access to FindMyPast (at home or at the local library) his Service record is available to view. It would appear that he joined up in the 'ranks' but was then discharged from the 'ranks' when given a temporary commission.

His Service record shows that he was 'killed as result of aeroplane accident' (Home) 23.3.18
