Helping a friend with his ancestors. This chap is particularly interesting and we would like to know more about him. His death cert. states he was born in Free State, Africa, 1863. His father we think, was Thomas. Anyone with any more info?  We know a lot more about his life in Australia. He was murdered in 1914.

I have just had a quick look at this and I think Trees have mistakes.
They have Census with Alfreds Father as a Lace Maker born c 1840, Nottinghamshire.

I dont think a Lace Maker would become a Govt Superintendant a few years later!

1881 Census in England we have;
Thomas H. Girling, 47, Head, Mar, Superintendant (Gov), born Deal, Kent
Alfred Samuel H. Girling, 18, Son, School,  born Free State Africa, Africa

Will see what else I can find soon.

It is also possible he went to Australia also;

Trish! What can I say??? Thank you so much for that........ you've just added another piece to the puzzle! I think this might have been a second? marriage. He was a bit of a lad and had 7 or 8 children, and the lady he took up with here had 6 or 7 (or so we are told!). His death cert also says his relationship at time of death was de facto. He was murdered in QLD!!

I meant Alfred was a bit of a lad. Had a rotten temper too, apparently!
