Apparently it would cost £8.30 plus extra costs, which is reasonable. I'll try and secure some funds for it and send off soon.

The £8.40 only covers the cost of them deciding if copies can be produced and giving you the quote - the 'extra costs' are for the time and materials invoved in making the copy, which could be considerable depending on the document length.

Are you so far away from London that a visit in person is out of the question? A standard off-peak return fare is around £35 - you might be able to get a cheaper fare than that booking ahead or if there are any special offers/railcards available. You might want to consider saving up a couple of things to look for and then having a day trip to London.

London's about 50 minutes away on the train so not that far. There are a few documents held at the National Archives that I'd like to see so that is a decent idea.

It is certainly worth a visit.
