Donald McKinnon and Mary Cameron
« on: Friday 11 May 18 17:41 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am looking for information on Donald McKinnon and Mary Cameron of Scotland.

Here is the information I know:
Children of Donald McKinnon and Mary Cameron:
John McKinnon: unknown birth. Death: 7 Mar 1858 • Oban, Argyll, Scotland. John was married to Catharine McPherson (marriage date is 08 Mar 1816 in Morven, Argyll, Scotland.

I am also looking for information on the parents of Catharine McPherson (wife of John Mckinnon). I believe she died on 11 MAY 1877 in Oban, Scotland.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

If you get a copy of the death for Catherine McKinnon that will give you her parents names
There is a death on Scotlands People for a Catherine McKinnon other surname McPherson
1877 Kilmore and Kilbride aged 85 years ...might be a possibility

Rosie --- yes --normally the death cert from Scotland's People does give parents information -- but I had a look at this one and unfortunately it doesn't -- just gives the father's surname and 'unknown' for the mother.

What a pity.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Hi Rosie -- yes that was the correct death you found.
Catherine was apparently 85 years old and died of Paralysis (1 month) - in the Poorhouse, Oban.

The informant seems to be Donald McCarty, Gatekeeper, present at the death and the registered witness was a John McDougall (names quite difficult to decipher). However it is probable that they were not relatives and wouldn't know the names of her parents.

She was described as widow of John McKinnon, General Labourer.

Hence it is a baptism which is needed to find her parents. Mary Cameron* is quite a common name. It would be helpful to obtain the names of John and Catherine's children, to see if that would help because of the naming patterns frequently used in Scotland.

I haven't looked on census records for the couple - there may just be children with them early on.

Edit -- sorry ignore the 'Cameron' - her maiden name was of course McPherson! Her father's name is simply shown as McPherson.

Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

It's always a help when giving info. e.g. a death date to include the age recorded & approx. date of birth from any records you have as well as a DC (which isn't always accurate).

If age fluctuates on those records it's best to put approx. between A & B as it saves a lot of work with a calculator or excel  ;)

I agree (in order of eldest to youngest) as well as when/where they were born.
