Family missing on the 1901 census
« on: Friday 11 May 18 19:39 BST (UK) »

I'm looking at the family of Joseph (sometimes Joseph Patrick) O'Donnell and I've hit a brickwall in 1901.

On the 1911 census they are living at 86 Ravald Street, Manchester. Mary O'Donnell age 48, a widow, and her sons Joseph age 25  (born 1886) and William age 21 (born 1890) Mary says she's had 11 children and 8 have died.

The family are nowhere to be found on the 1901 census. I've tried every trick in the book and none of them appear to be recorded anywhere in the country.

On the 1891 census I suspect the family have changed their name to McDonnell.  RG12 3234. Margaret their daughter is in a Convent Reformatory in Bristol in 1901

Can anyone confirm that the McDonnell's are the O'Donnel's in 1891 or find them in 1901.

Thank you.

Well, you dont indicate where any were born, and you dont state where they were in 1891, and you dont give a list of candidate births to track their locations for 1901 or therabouts?

I can’t find the McDonnell family you refer to in 1891, but the McDonald family (Joseph 27 & Mary 30) at 8 Ludgate Hill, Manchester looks possible - though Mary’s birth place is Manchester rather than Ireland.

Children are Joseph 5, James 3 and Robert 11mo, all born in Manchester.

RG12/3248/36/16.

Added: on further consideration, maybe not, as they don’t have a William.

1901 for this family: RG13/3755/7/5.

Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)

Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)

Hi

"I'm looking at ....." ?

Is this not your own family?

Full particulars of who you are looking for would be nice?

What have you been given?

Yes that's the same family redtonyt. The ages for Joseph and William fit the 1911 and the mothers name and age as well.

All I know is the name Joseph Patrick O'Donnell, with a brother William and a brother Thomas who died when he was about 4. I don't know where they were born but the family were Irish.

Joseph Patrick married in 1914 in Manchester.

I'm trying to help a friend who has come across the same problem and asked if I could find them.

In the first post you had Joseph born in 1886, but is this his birth registration a year earlier?

It's definitely the wrong one I traced him and he died in Salford. I think Joseph is the one born in the 1st quarter 1886 in Manchester and it fits the 1939 Register. I think that Patrick was his Confirmation name because he doesn't use it on any other records.
