Date please, Congresbury Somerset
« on: Friday 11 May 18 20:13 BST (UK) »
Hi all. Would anybody be kind enough to date this photo please ? the caption says Church Road, Congresbury, but it is actually The Causeway. Also would anybody be able to hazard an educated guess as to the occupations of the two men in overalls, based on what they are wearing. The photo is taken directly outside of my g.g grandfather's shop and I would love to think that either of the men could be him. Thankyou for any help.

First of all looking at an old map they appear to be standing in Broad St. with Kent Rd. over the bridge. The white building being the pub. Just to the rear is the ancient cross.
Datewise men dressed like this over a long period. They wouldn't have looked out of place dressed like this from the 1880's into the 1920's.
I don't think it's as late as 1900-20 as I would expect the quality to be better than this so 1880's - around 1900 I would suggest.
The man on the right is wearing a white coat & butcher's apron.
The man on the left is wearing a dust coat typical for a waggoner.

I can't help with dating, but this photo is said to be from 1903:

There's another one (undated) at

http://www.congresbury-pc.gov.uk/Congresbury-Parish-Council/conservation_area-6417.aspx

and one looking the other way, said to be Victorian:

I don't know if you'd be able to estimate a date for yours by comparing the pub's appearance, and looking for any small changes.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Thankyou Jim, and Arthur. I did think that the man on the right may have been a butcher.
