Charles Franks - Immigration
« on: Saturday 12 May 18 12:07 BST (UK) »
I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me in my search for the immigration documents of Charles Franks to Australia.

So what I know so far is that he was born on 6 Dec 1839 in Brest, France and emigrated to Australia from Toulon arriving in Dec 1864 at Sydney according to his naturalisation certificate, however that certificate was created many years after his arrival so I'm unsure if it can be fully trusted with dates.

According to family legend he jumped ship with his brother. On his headstone his name is written as Charles William P Franks and on one of his children's birth certificates his name is written as Ernest Victor Franks.

Any help in finding some documents relating to his arrival would be greatly appreciated!

If he jumped ship, you might find a reference in a Government Gazette - if the ship owners / captain were looking for him.

Hi,

Had a look at his Naturalization Record held at the National Archives and the name of the ship could have been "Cornwallis" that arrived in Sydney in February 1864.

You can search passenger and crew lists arriving in Sydney here
http://marinersandships.com.au/search.htm

Here is the crew and passenger list for the Cornwallis that arrived in Feb 1864
http://marinersandships.com.au/1864/02/072cor.htm
I can't see him there - you can check the original scan at the link at bottom of page

There is a Chas FRANK, A.B, age 25, from Lisbon on the Alfred The Great arriving 1862

adding :
Interestingly there is a Frank HANS AB ,age 22, from France also on the Alfred The Great.  Could it be Hans FRANK(S)?

I'll check out those links.
His marriage certificate states he was born in Brest and his father was named John Franks who was a baker. Mother is listed as unknown. Each of his children's birth certificates relate that he was born in Brest. I imagine that "Franks" may be an anglicism

Hi,

The "Cornwallis" that arrived in Sydney in February 1864 was the new 1200 ton Iron Clipper from London.

There was a Bargue of 648 tons with the same same that did voyages to Australia as well in the 1860s from London.
