I've found something quite intriguing on the 1891 census
A John and Mary Hawthorne residing at Turnerson Street, Salford, Lancashire with their children Edward 1883, James 1885, John 1887 and Charlie 1889. All children born Salford.
Registration district Salford
Piece number 3226
Folio 58

Births from GRO as Duffy
DUFFY, EDWARD HAWTHORN
GRO Reference: 1883 J Quarter in SALFORD Volume 08D Page 140
DUFFY, JAMES HAWTHORN
GRO Reference: 1885 M Quarter in SALFORD Volume 08D Page 173
DUFFY, JOHN HAWTHORN
GRO Reference: 1887 M Quarter in SALFORD Volume 08D Page 141
DUFFY, CHARLES HAWTHORN
GRO Reference: 1889 M Quarter in SALFORD Volume 08D Page 131
If you try to find the above births as HAWTHORNE on the GRO nothing shows up.
I suspect that for some reason the Duffy family were transcribed as Hawthorne.
What do others think?
Might explain why in looking for 'Duffy' things haven't mapped out
Family members are correct to my knowledge with Charlie being Charles and my granddad Joseph to follow in a couple of years. Be interesting to hear others thoughts as you have asked
Thanks
