Yep, I think we all agree with that  ;D

Hopefully the 1882 marriage cert will confirm details better for them.

I've found something quite intriguing on the 1891 census

A John and Mary Hawthorne residing at Turnerson Street, Salford, Lancashire with their children Edward 1883, James 1885, John 1887 and Charlie 1889.  All children born Salford.

Registration district   Salford
Piece number   3226
Folio   58
Page   9

Births from GRO as Duffy

DUFFY, EDWARD       HAWTHORN
GRO Reference: 1883  J Quarter in SALFORD  Volume 08D  Page 140

DUFFY, JAMES       HAWTHORN
GRO Reference: 1885  M Quarter in SALFORD  Volume 08D  Page 173

DUFFY, JOHN       HAWTHORN
GRO Reference: 1887  M Quarter in SALFORD  Volume 08D  Page 141

DUFFY, CHARLES       HAWTHORN
GRO Reference: 1889  M Quarter in SALFORD  Volume 08D  Page 131

If you try to find the above births as HAWTHORNE on the GRO nothing shows up.

I suspect that for some reason the Duffy family were transcribed as Hawthorne.

What do others think?

Might explain why in looking for 'Duffy' things haven't mapped out :)

Family members are correct to my knowledge with Charlie being Charles and my granddad Joseph to follow in a couple of years. Be interesting to hear others thoughts as you have asked :)

Thanks

I'm "almost" sure that John and Mary are listed as HAWTHORNE on the 1891.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:78J2-9PZ

(Father John is on the previous page-born~1857 Roscommon Ireland).

The children look correct. One extra is:

DUFFY, EDWARD       mmn HAWTHORN
 1883  J Quarter in SALFORD  Volume 08D  Page 140

Maureen

I've not got Edward in so this helps perhaps.

What I have found generally speaking is the first child is born in the year after marriage so John Mary marrying in 1882 but 'first' child 1885 was strange. EDWARD in 1883 fits well therefore.

That is a brilliant find from Girl Guide.

I had a look on FreeBMD and can't see matching HAWTHORN or HAWTHORNE entries for the children shown on the 1891 census.

(We're crossing posts again, Rosie99 - is this a case of 'great minds think alike'?)  ;D

Interestingly if the 1891 'Hawthorne' transcribed census is correct

Mary shows as 34 years of age = 1857 born - not 1872 as the Mary located previously was. This would make our 'new' Mary 25years when married and IMO makes sense :)

Possible death for Mary?

Deaths Mar 1892
Duffy    Mary    44    Salford    8d   21

Gives a birth year of 1848, but if her birthday was later in the year 1847

Added - Sorry that is wrong by ten years! Wasn't thinking straight there.  ::)
Ashford: Somerset, London
England: Devon, London, New Zealand
Holdway: Wiltshire
Hooper: Bristol, Somerset
Knowling: Devon, London
Southcott: Devon, China
Strong: Wiltshire
Watson: Cambridgeshire
White: Bristol
Windo - Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire

No prob. :)

I think, when we have the right Mary from Marriage Certificate, the death will follow.

Johns marriage to Elizabeth (2nd wife) was 1898.
