My parents marriage was bigamous and I can't find any records
« on: Sunday 13 May 18 15:36 BST (UK) »
My parents are both dead and I am their only child so here are all the details I have and I hope someone can help me trace the records.  I'm an Ancestry user but I still can't even find my mother's birth record on there even though I have her birth certificate!  She was born Sheila (later she spelt her Christian name as Sheelagh) Margaret Yeoman on 10 June 1923 in Glasgow.  My father was born Peter Richardson on 27 or 28 November 1897 or 1898 (yes there was a huge age difference) in Linlithgow.  I believe they married in Guildford in September 1944 because I have a honeymoon hotel receipt for that date.  I was born in 1948 and have no memory of my father.  I believe my mother discovered her marriage was bigamous in 1951 or thereabouts, there was a court case, he went to prison.  I have asked Surrey Records Office about this and they say they have no record but I intend to visit there on Friday to find out for myself.  In the meantime any help would be appreciated.  Both my mother's and father's siblings are all dead but if it helps their names were Ian, Malcolm, George, Donald and Kenneth Yeoman, and John and Robert Richardson.  It's probably also worth mentioning that I think my mother's father was also a bigamist as I can find a record of his 'first' marriage to Ethel but not his second to my grandmother, Catherine.  He was Maurice Yeoman from Totnes and served in the RVC during the first world war until he was wounded and sent home.  Anything related to him would also be much appreciated.

Their births would be available on ScotlandsPeople (www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk). not Ancestry.

They did marry in 1944.

A local newspaper would be the best place to find a bigamy case , but not many for the 1950s are available yet online. Where were they living at that time it was discovered and the court case ? If it wasn't Surrey, then they are unlikely to have any relevant records.

It's probably also worth mentioning that I think my mother's father was also a bigamist as I can find a record of his 'first' marriage to Ethel but not his second to my grandmother, Catherine.
I don't think bigamy works like that.  If there was a marriage between those two it would have been registered like any other.  Unless you're suggesting that the bigamy was proved and the court ordered the register entry to be removed?   Otherwise surely it's more likely that the two never got married.
