Yes it was the probate index, an excellent free resource  ;D

I still can't see them in 1861 though.  Did you manage to locate a police employment record for him  :-\

ADDED I don't think the police record will help with his 1861 location - he did not join the Met police until 1866.

Yes, I have his service record. No idea where he is in 1861, same with his future wife. I know he married once before and was a widower, so that might give a clue. I don't recall when it was though.

Not this particular marriage as I am not descended from this union. Similarly I don't keep note of male remarriages, though I do of female ones as a name change will mean a different name at death.

It was in 1865, in the Plymouth district.
