John G Ross and Sarah Thompson
« on: Monday 14 May 18 08:52 BST (UK) »
Hello All,

I would love to know the marriage date and place for the above couple. An added bonus would be to know his full name. Then perhaps I could find him in England.
According to the Philadelphia 1870 Census, John was born in England and Sarah in Ireland. At this date they had two children - Joseph F Ross (b 1861) and Elizabeth Phoebe Ross (b 1868)
Sarah  divorced John, and eventually arrived in Canterbury, New Zealand. I do not know what happened to John G.

Thank You
Jean
New Zealand

This is a previous question I asked:

They are married before June 4, 1860 when the census was taken.  They are in Philadelphia, living in household of Joseph Thomson.  Also in house is presumably another brother, Robert Thomson, his wife and child.

Hello amongd,

Apologies for the delay in responding.
Thank you for taking an interest in my people.
I have to disagree with you for the Joseph Ross as a homeless child. He may have been homeless, but at the age of 19 he would not be regarded as a child.
It is so frustrating researching the USA from so far away, but snippets such as yours are a great help.

Did Sarah actually divorce John? According to other thread (thanks for including link)
In 1889 Sarah Ross (nee Thompson) married in New Zealand. As proof that she was free to marry she has written Living under Deed of Legal Separation Executed in Philadelphia in 1876.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hello aghadowey,

That is something I had not thought of. She remarried in December of 1889 and her new husband was a widower. He has written the date of the death of his first wife in the appropriate column to show he was free to marry. Sarah was well educated so she must have known what she was doing. Perhaps after X amount of years the Legal Separation from Philadelphia became a divorce, and she had been separated for 13 years at the time of her second marriage.

Regards
Jean
