« on: Monday 14 May 18 14:47 BST (UK) »
I have an ancestor whose 1939 entry has
"YEDE2246822" after the fold, dated 11.7.45

Does anyone know what this means?

Hi

If the person is no longer with us, may we know the search parameters for the entry?

Looks like a National Insurance number to me and perhaps the date was the date the number was allocated.

"EDE" is the enumeration district code for Basingstoke.
Does this relate in any way to the person?

This would be followed by a schedule number and a national registration number.

Also remember that if a person moved to a different area, they would need a new National Identity Card - and therefore a new number.

Could this be someone who joined the forces in 1945 (incidentally, I think the date might be 11.2.45 - compare the 2's in the long number), and this is their service number?

National Insurance numbers comprise Letters and Numbers in the following format:
 L L N N N N N N L so it's not that.

I'm not sure whether they were issued as early as 1945 :-\

The 'Y' prefix means it was a replacement for a card that was lost or stolen, and 'EDE' means it was issued in Basingstoke, as KGarrad suggests. 2246822 is the rest of the person's new National Identity number, and would have become their NHS number in 1948. Only the cards issued as part of the 1939 enumeration had schedule numbers and individual numbers, after that any new numbers issued had a single 'long' number like this one.

A new number with a Y prefix was only issued if a card was lost or stolen, so that the old one could be cancelled. If someone moved to another district they would keep their old number.
