Napoleonic War Records
« on: Monday 14 May 18 21:03 BST (UK) »
Dear all,

I have just found out that my husband's 3xgt grandfather saw some sort of military service during the Napoleonic wars.  In his obituary, it says that he was in the Presteign Royal Volunteers.  On FindMyPast, there is a record of a Jeremiah Davies serving in the 6th Battalion (Herefordshire).  The place (of birth? of enlistment?) is given as Shabdon (probably a mishearing/mistranscribing of Shobdon) which would fit with the general location of where Jeremiah lived.

I can't find any references online to the the Presteign Royal Volunteers - has anyone else come across them?

How do I match up/rule out the Jeremiah serving with the 6th Battalion and the Jeremiah serving with the PRV?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

It isn't proof, but I found this:
https://archive.org/stream/hermajestysarmyd04richuoft/hermajestysarmyd04richuoft_djvu.txt
It doesn't give helpful Napoleonic dates, but it does demonstrate a link between Presteign and the Herefords:

HER MAJESTY'S ARMY  - A DESCRIPTIVE ACCOUNT OF THE VARIOUS REGIMENTS NOW COMPRISING THE QUEEN'S FORCES, FROM THEIR FIRST ESTABLISHMENT TO THE PRESENT TIME

BY WALTER RICHARDS (IN FOUR DIVISIONS - DIV. IV.)
LONDON J. S. VIRTUE & CO., LIMITED 294, CITY ROAD AND 26, IVY LANE

(p330)
The 1st HEREFORDSHIRE, the Hereford and Radnor Rifles, hold the position of 3rd
Volunteer battalion to the Shropshire regiment. Seven corps were raised in Hereford-
shire, and were speedily associated with " their brothers of Radnorshire," the men of
Presteign, Knighton.

Thank you Stan for putting up the obituary - this is where I found the reference to Presteign Royal Volunteers.  I did wonder whether it was a misprint, and was meant to say Rifle Volunteers  ???
