Help With Pension Record Please
« on: Tuesday 15 May 18 10:00 BST (UK) »
I have found a pension record I believe is for my gg grandfather Charles Henning and I understand that I can order copies of the application file from the National Archives website. However I am unsure as to whether or not the pension record is based on Federal military service rather than state or confererate.

This is the link to the document I have found: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KDYY-QT6

Also Charles would have been 58 years old at the time of the invalid date on the pension record, is that too old to have served, or is this record for another Charles Henning with a wife Anna M Henning?

I would be very grateful for some guidance before I part with any money as the fee's are quite high.

NB: Seems the 32nd Massachusetts Voluntary Infantry regiment disbanded in 1865. My Charles Henning emigrated to the US sometime between 1861-1863 and was not naturalized until 1868. Is it likely he could have been a volunteer, would they have accepted non US citizens?

Company Descriptive Card:
Company L, 32 Reg't, Mass. Infantry

Charles Henning
Age: 30
Height: 5' 8 1/2"
Complexion:  Dark
Eyes:  Black
Hair:  Brown
Born:  Norway  (Throndhjenn?)
Occupation:  Carpenter
Drafted:  term of 3 years
Date of draft:  29 Aug 1863

If this is your guy, I can probably provide most of his service records.  He apparently enlisted as a substitute for Darby Cately/Gately.

Wow Steve, I've just seen this.  I see the widow's filing was from NJ so it has to be the family we've been looking at.  How great!

Age, born Norway & a Carpenter - he's definitely looking more & more like a match for the Charles previously in Hull.  Excited for you  :D

Oh, and the birth place matches that found by Jamcat too.

How great is rootschat  ;D

Yes Jomot and Jamcat I now have the war records for Charles thanks to Genealiza   :D :D

I am now on the trail of the pension records. Looking at the archives.gov website it says:

Form Number:   NATF 85
Use to:   Order copies of military pension application files based on Federal (not State or Confederate) service between 1775 and 1903 (before World War I).

What I need to clarify is whether the pension application made by Charles who was in the 32nd Massachusetts Infantry on the Union side in 1863 - 1865 is covered by the above. My knowledge of American history is not good so any guidance would be appreciated.
