Smith Family Mystery - John Smith and Brother George Birnie Smith
« on: Tuesday 15 May 18 21:09 BST (UK) »
wondered if anyone can help me

trying to find death records or any information on 2 brothers , these men are my grandfathers uncles

JOHN SMITH- born at cowsrieve Peterhead Scotland 19-01-1879 to parents William Smith and Elizabeth m/s Davidson

and younger brother

George Birnie Smith
born cowsrieve peterhead scotland to the same parents as above
date of birth is 5-11-1895

in 1901 census they are both seen at home in peterhead at blackhills

i dont know anything else about them after this census

the only other thing i can add
is i find it strange as you would think george birnie smith would be easy to find with the middle name
but i cant find him

but my grandfather james smith had a brother with exactly same name george birnie smith and was born 35 years later

so the george birnie smith of 1895 would be an uncle to the george birnie smith of 1930s

wondered if anyone can pull anything out that guides me closer to peacing together where and what happened to this men

thanks ryan

Are you sure both men remained in Scotland?  Have you checked to see if they emigrated?

Have you checked SP for marriages for them?

Have you checked to see if either was killed in WW1 - www.cwgc.org

Thanks Where can I find that ?

Also I think John smith is so hard to find even in Scotland as it’s such a common name

Passenger lists are available on various subscription sites but your nearest main library probably has access to either Ancestry or FindMyPast

SP = www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

If either came to England - www.freebmd.org.uk

WW1 deaths - www.cwgc.org

Thanks for that

Checked it out

It appears that this George has different parents William right enough for father but his occupation is different I think if I could see George’s marriage cert it could tell me again the parents but on his birth his parents are William smith and Elizabeth Davidson same as all the other siblings so this makes me think although you suggested a very realistic match. It seems it maybe another man , very close though as ages almost perfect

Very hard to understand why a George birnie Smith is hard to find , il keep working on it and thanks for your contributions

John smith - son - Kirk street Peterhead

Also found  a George smith from Peterhead killed in France and Flanders 26th Oct 1917 Gordon Highlanders Second batt,
Killed in action

Can anyone help with these clues ?

Register of Soldiers Effects on Ancestry has him down as George B Smith and his mother Elizabeth was his sole legatee. This looks a promising match for your George Birnie Smith.
