Benfieldside (Blackhill) Cemetery Consett Co. Durham
« on: Tuesday 15 May 18 22:02 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am new to this forum and hoping for a bit of guidance. I notice that some posters have received help finding plots in the above cemetery

I visited Blackhill Cemetery today to search for a number of my relatives who I know to be buried there. Unfortunately I didn't realise how big the cemetery is and had no luck whatsoever in finding the graves.
I plan a revisit and wonder if anyone can give me any idea of where the plots are and if they are marked prior to my next visit.
My ancestors are:
Edward Keenan         born 1828 died 1866
Patrick Keenan          born 1852 died 1902
Margaret Keenan       born 1855 died 1906
John Thomas Keenan born 1876 died 1932
Thanks in advance

Hi, many thanks for your reply the information is extremely helpful.
There was no one around whilst I was there and I have no plot details. I will explore the avenues open to obtaining one and will revisit once I have the information.

Hi Jon,

Could you tell me how you found this information on Family Search? I have tried searching for other family members without success. I have even tried searching for the ones you found for me but again with no success.

Hi
There is sometimes extra stuff on FamilySearch that can be accessed at home via a search in their catalogue. Basically, I mean digitized microfilms. But many of these films can only be viewed at a family history centre, and not all their films have been digitized.  It's really pot luck!
Some of the records are of course indexed on their website, but not all of them.
So typing in Benfieldside in the catalogue, which is here
https://www.familysearch.org/catalog/search

and then selecting "cemeteries" from the list, leads to
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/996903?availability=Family%20History%20Library

Click on the camera icon to start browsing a film.
There are several burial registers on each film, at the beginning of each register there seems to be a surname index, which gives the entry number, and this may help.
John

I wonder if some kind soul could help me locate a grave at Benfieldside (Blackhill) Cemetery, so that I can get a photograph of the headstone, and/or more details of those buried there..

I found the burial register on FamilySearch.org, which says the burial was in Place: "G o G", Grave: 55, in Consecrated ground. I think it says G. o. G., but have now idea what this means, or where it might be.

The burial in question is that of Hannah ROWE, of Bar House, Consett, aged 69, on 23 Apr 1946 .

Place: G o G, Grave: 55, Consecrated ground
Burial register: age 98, Burial 23275

I couldn't find this in the Grave Register. I had been hoping to see who else might be buried in that grave.

Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

Regards

John

I think 'o G' might perhaps refer to the 'Old' Graveyard, which is on the south side of the road.

You can see some references to burials in section '.. o G' on this page
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS6T-NDRD?i=398&cat=996903

So my reading of it is that she was buried in section G of the Old Graveyard.
