Marriage of John Willows (Willis) to Elizabeth c1682
« on: Thursday 17 May 18 07:22 BST (UK) »
I've been unable for some while to find the above marriage can anyone help?

Their 6 known children were all baptised in Shalford, they are:-
John 13 Apr 1684.
Thomas 21 Sep 1689.
Josias 21 Sep 1689.
Mary 13 Jul 1695.
Edward  13 Jul 1695.
Elizabeth 20 May 1700.

I did find on FindMyPast Boyd's marriage Index a John Willis and Elizabeth Coger married 1682 at Colchester All Saints, I haven't been able to follow that up but I'd like to see if there are any other possible marriages around.

I suspect John Willows (senior) may have been born in Shalford, I understand that there were Willis families as far back as the mid 1500s in Shalford.

Any help gratefully received.

Concentrating currently on:
Essex: Card, Harris, Stowell, Theobald/Tibbles & Turner.
Norfolk: Beale, Cork & Dalton.
Yorkshire: Oswald Sturdy birth/baptism c1708, Oswald where the devil are you?

Thanks for that Trevor, your search of Shalford gives me confidence that I didn't miss the marriage, in difficult cases like this there's always the thought lurking "did I miss something".

Also the the info about the Colchester couple being of St Botolphs parish adds to the picture.

Regards and thanks.

Hi Trish,

Temperance!  :o  :)

That's interesting, I've looked for the marriage on Free Reg but not looked for the children's baptisms, I got those from at the ERO on one of my trips back to the UK and Essex.  Have to look into that, I'm planning to get some Essex Ancestor subs sometime after my holidays.

Regards and Thanks.

You’re right about there being other Willis. There’s an edward and Thomas having children around 1680.
Jamiesons, Martins and McGonigals of Coleraine, Londonderry
and
Cullens, Grahams and Challenors of Dublin county and city.

Hi nannyj,

"You’re right about there being other Willis. There’s an Edward and Thomas having children around 1680."

But why oh why couldn't all my ancestors have married at Shalford (assuming they didn't), because it looks pretty certain that they were born/baptised there.  ???  ;D

I think I have the baptism of John Willowes (1661) husband of Elizabeth unknown, as 10 Nov 1661 at Shalford, his parents John Willowes & Mary unknown, plus John and Mary's other children children.

I think I also have the grandparents of John (1661), John Willowes and Martha unknown, plus their children.

Also the great grandparents, Edward Willowes and Ann  Pawinflynn, plus their children.

Those three families come from Family Search and I have yet to confirm the details and verify them as ancestors, I'm feeling fairly confident they are ancestors.

As with John & Elizabeth, I haven't as yet found marriages for two of the above three couples, they seem determined to thwart me.  ::)  ;D

I was lucky with Edward Willowes and his wife Ann Pawinflynn, their marriage was on Family Search as 25 Sep 1582 at Shalford.
