Gedmatch
« on: Thursday 17 May 18 09:25 BST (UK) »
Perhaps I should put this on a more general page, although perhaps someone here can answer.

I uploaded my Ancestry DNA information to Gedmatch earlier in the week as suggested by a R'chatter.  I've been trying to access the Gedmatch site for a ocuple of days but just get this message:

www.gedmatch.com is currently unable to handle this request.
HTTP ERROR 503

Anyone else using GEDmatch?  Any help appreciated!

Yes Judith I am currently getting a similar error message.

This page isn’t working
www.gedmatch.com is currently unable to handle this request.
HTTP ERROR 503

But I have used gedmatch successfully in over the past year or so.

Ros

edited : to hopefully make clearer that I have used it several times over a period of at least a year

Thanks Ros, glad to know it's not just me. Perhaps we just need to be patient.  ::)
Do you find it useful?

Hi Judith,
Yes  I think it is a temporary glitch. :)

gedmatch does seem to be potentially quite powerful.  Apart from comparing DNA from different sources it also provides more advanced non-standard comparisons.

It provides a few simple standard comparison tests which you can click on and see the results.
I am ashamed to say that these are the only tests I have done so far.  And it confirms that my known relatives are related  :)   Plus a few extras which we are exploring ...

It also provides more information and the facility for changing some of the parameters to do more specific customised searches.   I think this could be useful for those who are adopted or who have unknown fathers etc in their genealogy.  It does sound so interesting but so far I haven't tried any of them. (adding : as I don't understand enough yet  :-[ )

As you have probably heard, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will take effect on 25 May 2018. This European regulation is designed to give us more control over our own data and to protect it as much as possible.  I had a message this morning from GEDmatch that they are working on compliance and having some outages, or words to that effect.  Cheers Neil

For me, the most awesome tool is the "People who match one or both of 2 kits*.

If you have a known relation who has uploaded to gedmatch too, then entering both your kits in this function returns all the other people on the site who match you both.

So, I put cousin Huw in (my Mam's youngest sister's "boy") and anyone who matches us both is clearly related on our maternal side. It seems much more productive to approach "strangers" by email if I can provide some rationale for contacting them greater than simply "we appear to match"
Thomas, Davies, Jones, Walters, Daniel in Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion. That should narrow it down a bit!

Thanks diplodicus  :)  That sounds like something I could try (once I convince other family to upload their data to gedmatch).
