Children missing from 1939 census
« on: Thursday 17 May 18 10:48 BST (UK) »
Hello

Can you please tell me how to find children that are missing from the 1939 census, is there a register if they were sent away?

Kerby -- only people born before 1916 are shown on the 1939 register for privacy reasons. If the children are with their parents you should see black markings hiding them from view.

In some cases they have accidentally been left on view -- or, if they have now died and proof of this has been sent to Find My Past - they will be revealed. (Not sure what is happening at Ancestry regarding notifying that site of deaths of people born after 1916.)

Edited to show Before rather than after 1916 (Senior moment!)
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Born before 1916.

I may be wrong,  but at the moment I believe only Findmypast can open on closed records on proof of death.

Hi Jebber -- yes I realised what I had done and edited it - but you had clearly seen my error before I corrected it.

Answer:
If you are not a Findmypast subscriber, please contact The National Archives to request a search of closed records within the 1939 Registers.
If your request is successful, we will receive notification and instruction directly from The National Archives to open the record.

If they were born after 1918 and have already died, they could have been sent away as evacuees so they aren't where you think they should be.

If you have the names and exact date of birth, check all the results incase they are living with other families. In the case of girls who later married, checked under their married surnames as the register was updated with marriages and deaths upto 1991.

If they are still alive, then you won't be able to find them unless you know where they were evacuated to. Even then their names will still be redacted and you will only have the details for those at the same address who have alread died.

Not quite as easy as that.
If you are not a Findmypast subscriber you have to pay the National Archives £23.35 for this service.
In other words you have to pay the National Archives to enable them to comply with the law of the land:

Disgusting!
