Northumberland Communities website
« on: Thursday 17 May 18 19:51 BST (UK) »
Is useful and I have used it a lot. Went there today and got a message from the browser which says:
 "This Connection is not Private
This website may be impersonating "communities.northumberland.gov.uk" to steal your personal or financial information. you should go back to the previous page."

I get the same message if I try a different browser.

Clicking on more details tells me there is a host name mismatch.

Does anyone have any idea who I should report this to? Perhaps Woodhorn may know who administers the site?

I am sure that its just a glitch in the admin of the site but it would be a real shame if we can't get it rectified.

Firefox just tells me the site is insecure and won't let me proceed - the same thing happens if I try to connect through the link on the Experience Woodhorn website.  I wonder whether that has something to do with the fact that the archives are no longer part of the Woodhorn Trust (back under county council control).

An email to the archives would be my suggested first attempt - cheaper than a phone call!

Thanks Christine, have sent off an email to the archives, hopefully someone will pass it onto the technical dept.

I seem to remember there was a problem with another archives website recently and that was to do with hosting so perhaps the change back to the county council control is the source of the problems.

Have had an auto reply, which thanks me for my enquiry and that the team will respond within 20 working days. So holding breath not a good option :-)
Still, it should be fixed in the fullness of time .

Oddly, I get a similarly alarming warning when I try to access the Ashmolean in Oxford's website!

I had another go at this tonight - same result but looking at it further Firefox is telling me that they are using a validation certificate belonging to another website!

I might mention this to them on Wednesday - a bit quicker than waiting 20 days  :-X

Thanks Christine, that would be useful.

Yes, it must be something to do with the websites now being maintained by a different IT dept. I'd hazard a guess that its similar to the problem a while back when the catalogue went walkabout. The catalogue url was changed to the new host but they didn't change the links which still pointed at the old host.
This time something has been left at the old hosting url on the security certificate which brings up this kind of warning.
For future reference (as there may be other problems not yet identified) if the archives could tell you how we can contact the current IT dept to report problems that would be useful.

hmm, I had a reply from the archives.
They suggested that I use https:// at the start of the url, which won't make a blind bit of difference as https means you want to access a secure site and, because there is a mismatch on the security cert,  its not regarded as secure cos something looks 'iffy' in the certificate details.

To be fair they are archives staff, not IT people and I don't expect them to have specialist IT knowledge.

Have replied to ask if they can tell me who does the site admin/maintenance -  to which I got an auto response saying they have received my enquiry and will reply within 20 working days.

rinse and repeat :-)

It would be a shame if this site can't be sorted, it really is informative and useful and a lot of work has gone into making it.
I'll plod on with it.
