On this 1851 Census for William King, the "where born" column sates "Bucks, Turser" Can someone tell me what and/or where this is?
Thanks,
Brian

The word may be Tursen.

Wikipedia says that Turweston (near Brackley) was called Turson in the C18th.

Just a possibility.

Thanks. I'll check that out. I was wondering if the "Bucks" was referring to Buckinghamshire, as Middlesex also seems to be abbreviated, as do other counties. There were also relatives from Towersey, which isn't too far from Brackley

Yes, definitely - it's  the standard contraction.

By the way, have you noticed that Emily's POB is Oxon, Thame (where Oxon = Oxfordshire)?

A tree on Anc has William's siblings born in Towersey, Bucks   and lists William's marriage to Lydia Mayling as 2 Feb 1831 at St Catherine's Church, Towersey

I wonder if the birthplace in 1851 was a scrawl of Towersey  or maybe William had an accent  :-\

That is supposed to be the correct one...according to others. The "Mayling" name is also in some doubt as some say itis "Malins" or "Malin" I have a marriage certificate that looks like "Maylam" or "Maglam" under father's name. I even found a 1871 census with the name spelled "Mealin"

I noticed on the GRO Birth Index that their youngest child Ann Amelia b 1850 has her mother's maiden name listed a Mayling but on other children's births the mother's maiden name does vary.
Again relating  to how it was pronounced I suppose as she made her mark on her second marriage

It makes it difficult to follow when they switch spellings from Census to Census and various marriages. Seems they all decided on their own preferred spelling of their name
