It doesn't help  :)   I presume it could relate to their level of literacy

I wonder if the birthplace in 1851 was a scrawl of Towersey  or maybe William had an accent  :-\

A Lydia MELIN was baptised at Towersey on 19 March 1809, daughter of George and Ann. There is at least one sibling, under MELINS.

Images for Towersey are with the Oxfordshire parish registers on Ancestry (Towersey is very close to the county border).

Thanks everyone. I had prior info about Towersey so that looks like the obvious choice. The spelling of the name is certainly something to deal with! Malin, Malins, Mayling, Melin, Meline! It seems that they changed from one census to the next and in the same household; even splitting the spelling with some going with one form and the rest, another. Makes life interesting! :)

Just wondering why I can't access that on Ancestry. I have a membership, but when I enter the info, I don't get any results. Is UK not accessible from the Ancestry members in Canada?

If you have access to UK census etc then I would think you should be able to view this. I searched on Lydia Malin Melin born Towersey, Buckinghamshire and found the  record

Sorry Kay, I found it. For some reason when I put in a lot of info, it did nothing. When I searched just the first and last name with no dates or anything, it showed up!

It's better to omit the place of birth, because Ancestry thinks Towersey is in Oxfordshire. If you just enter Lydia Melin, and restrict the 'Collection Focus' in the drop-down box to UK & Ireland, it's the first result to come up.

ADDED - I see you've now found it anyway  :)

I hadn't realized that putting less info might be better. It seems to work that way, so will keep it in mind in the future. Thanks again
