Hi RSGrosse,

Christ Church in the town of North Shields, comes under the heading of 'Tynemouth'.  Locals (like me) tend to think of this just as North Shields.

I will see what the local studies at the library at North Shields may have on the Tates and will get back to you on this at some point this week.  As you say, there may be info held there which you may not already have. :)

You will be able to access it and take a copy ,put in Durham inheritance database or project it will bring up a simple search option, just put in Tate, and then click the one's you would like to view,Lancelot is quite eloquent in his last will and testement and names the children and their occupations making it easier to look for them

I quoted the newspaper notice re the death of Margaret Tate on the first page of the thread, Radcliff. I also pointed out that the reference to the " late Mr Lancelot Tate" appears to be contradicted by her burial record in the Tynemouth Bts which indicates he was still alive. There is also a notice in the Newcastle Courant 9 Oct 1840 which also refers to Margaret "widow of the late Mr L Tate".

Hi RSGrosse,

The 1852 marriage for Lancelot Tate and Jane Spence at Christ Church is in an old style format and is somewhat faded.  However, I can make out that they married on 'Seventh Day of February' 1852 and were Bachelor and Widow. They both signed with their marks.  There were two witnesses.  Thomas Old - he signed with his mark and another name which I can't make out due to fade.  Possibly (James? ?)

There is a lot of information regarding people with the surname of Tate in the A-Z folders and also in the index boxes.  Quite overwhelming! There is a reference to a Lancelot Tate who was married to an Elizabeth Tate who died in 1916 age 36 at Tynemouth Jubilee Infirmary .  Might this one be someone in your tree?

The register of baptisms at Christ Church very clear with very nice handwriting. ...

Thomas Tate born April 7 1805 Baptised May 5 1805 1 son of Lancelot Tate of Tyne (looking at the register I think this means 1st son - children placed in order)
Labourer by his Wife Margt Hays Nat of this Parish
