Searching for my gt grandparents marriage English/Fadian
« on: Saturday 19 May 18 19:13 BST (UK) »
Hi, it would be great if anyone could help me with this because I have been searching for ages with no luck.

I’m looking for the marriage of my gt grandparents Michael English and Margaret Fadian, they lived in Westport, Co. Mayo.  I can find Margaret’s birth certificate on which she is named ‘maggie’ she was born on the 2nd September 1898. No sign of a death for her though. Her fathers name was Daniel Fadian.  Michael was born 22 August 1892.  I can’t find a death for him either.  His father was also called Michael and his mother’s maiden name was Gallagher.

I’ve searched the Irish genealogy website and on ancestry so far.

Thanks for any help

I thought that was the marriage at first as well even though the ages were not correct but then my mum pointed out that my gt grandfathers name was not Patrick, it’s michael

Edited to add that my grandmother also called Margaret was born in August 1920 so the marriage was more than likely before then.

I looked in the 1911 census, for Michael ENGLISH, 19 +/- 5 years old. Eleven records were found, none with a father's name Patrick.....so the name on the marriage could be an error.

In my wife's family, one ancestor was married in January 1887, and produced her first child the following month, so the timing of the ENGLISH baby's birth is quite possible.

I will keep it in mind, he did have an older brother named Patrick, I guess there could have been some confusion.  Margaret’s age is well out as well, in May 1920 she would have been 21, the lady on the marriage record is 27, again there was some confusion over her age, she was 2 in 1901, by the 1911 census her mother had passed away and her father recorded her age as 14, he himself had gone from 48 to 63 in 10 years 😁

A 20ish age jump between the census isn't unusual, the old age pension was introduced in 1909 and for people born before civil registration the earlier census 1841/1851 was used to check their ages, many people fibbed on the 1911 in the hope of getting the pension early if the census was continued to be used for age checks, it wasn't.
